Be Your Own Boss

Be Your Own Boss

Be Your Own Boss is a BBC-run competition awarding business investment to the winning entrepreneur. It is backed by Richard Reed, one of the founders of Innocent. All you need to do to enter is explain your business idea. My entry for Flipped (the original name for The Little Pancake Company) is below:

Flipped. Great pancakes, Organic ingredients.

Flipped offers a menu of both traditional and innovative pancake combinations that will really get the taste buds watering – from good old apple crumble and ice cream to crepes made with chilli batter and rolled with houmous and roast vegetables, Flipped will always have something new for you to try. We sell pancakes, naturally.

And the best bit is that all our pancakes are organic and packed full of natural ingredients. For the health conscious, we’ve got wholemeal and gluten-free crepes with low-fat fillings. We will have the calorie content of all our pancakes and crepes available, so that everyone can indulge, whatever their diet. Our motto is ‘everything in moderation’, and this was a lesson learned from my year abroad living and working in Paris. With a crepe stand on every corner, the French have got indulgence with moderation down to a tee. At Flipped, we can also accommodate for vegans or those with lactose intolerances, too.

As well as crepes, there will be a great selection of other types of pancakes from around the world, including the much-loved American pancakes. Play it safe with a stack of traditional blueberry pancakes drizzled with maple syrup, or take the plunge and try butternut squash, rosemary and goats cheese pancakes. In addition, each month, we’ll be featuring a pancake from around the world. The name may change, from pannenkoeken in the Netherlands, to Kaiserschmarrn in Austria, but the love of pancakes is universal! From pancakes rolled with apricot jam in Austria, to green pancakes made from pandan leaf filled with coconut syrup in Bali, Flipped brings you tastes from all around the globe.

Organic lovers always manage to find a home away from home wherever they travel, and Flipped is all about creating a community for lovers of organic food, pancakes and travel! Offering yoga classes, a running club and shelves of books to read while you eat, you could easily spend an afternoon sampling our pancakes and enjoying the atmosphere. The personal touch is what makes Flipped somewhere to come back to. Pin your story or picture on our notice board – we’ll happily take a picture of you and your friends enjoying our pancakes on one of our polaroid cameras. One for you to take home and one for our pinboard. If you’ve got an idea for a pancake or crepe, tell us and we’ll make it up for you! If it’s good, we might even add it to the menu permanently! If you can’t make up your mind, then just take a seat and we’ll bring you over a stack of pancakes and a pick and mix selection of toppings – choose which you want or let us surprise you!

Flipped targets the 18-34 year old health conscious individuals, but our atmosphere doesn’t alienate those who don’t opt for organic, or just want a stack of mouth-watering chocolate chip pancakes covered in syrup. Mmmmm.

My dream is to open a Flipped cafe allowing people to grab a crepe to go, or sit down and enjoy a stack of pancakes with friends and family, and this is the business venture that I am seeking investment for. The long-term business model for this company involves not only offering franchise opportunities to others wanting to be their own boss, but also introducing a range of branded pancake cooking items such as whisks, spatulas and pancake pans so that you too can make pancakes, naturally. Ready made batter mixes will also be for sale in the cafe to encourage others to experiment at home.
